Symposium on International Frameworks and the Resolution of Ukraine War
On March 17, 2023, the Daisaku Ikeda Academic
Society for United Nations Studies (DIASUNS) based at the University of
Buckingham in the UK held a symposium on “The Role of International Frameworks
for Resolving the War in Ukraine” at Soka University in Hachioji, Tokyo.
DIASUNS was launched as a joint academic project between the two universities in 2021, building on an academic exchange relationship that dates back to 2011. The society undertakes research for the resolution of global problems that focuses on the support and reinforcement of the United Nations. Mr. Ikeda, founder of Soka University, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buckingham in 2011 for his contributions to education and peace.
The opening remarks at the symposium were made
by Soka University Vice President Ryohei Tanaka and Soka University Peace
Research Institute Director Hideki Tamai. Professor Julian Richards, director
of the University of Buckingham’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies,
delivered a keynote address, in which he gave an overview of the responses of
NATO member states’ to the crisis in Ukraine.
In the closing remarks, University of Buckingham Vice-Chancellor James Tooley and Soka University President Masashi Suzuki expressed their commitment to building peace and their desire to work together to promote active discussions toward the resolution of difficult problems confronting the world.
